Reds could replace Colombian goalscorer with Paris Saint-Germain striker if they decide against paying Monaco the £43.2m buyout clause.
Edinson Cavani's name cropped up shortly after David Moyes was sacked last year, as Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward promised the squad would be strengthened, and the
Paris Saint-Germain striker has hovered back onto The Reds' radar.
The likelihood is United will need to sign a striker in the summer, with Louis van Gaal supposedly unwilling to spend £43.2m on Radamel Falcao, who has completed 90 minutes just four times and scored only four goals.
Robin van Persie's form has nosedived and his contract expires next year, while Van Gaal remains resistant to playing Wayne Rooney up front and James Wilson, although promising, is raw.
Cavani has hit an impressive 14 goals in 31 games for PSG this term, however he is one of those strikers that give the impression they would struggle in the Premier League.
He was prolific with Napoli in Serie A, which is not as impressive a feat as it was 15 years ago and Ligue 1 is not the most distinguished of European leagues.
Cavani and Falcao were perhaps the two most eminent strikers in world football when they moved clubs in 2013 but things have not gone according to plan in France for the duo.
Cavani's first year with PSG was marred by his messy divorce, which impacted his form and contributed to an underwhelming World Cup performance.
United's quandary with Falcao is they might have to spend more than his buyout clause figure on another striker, such as Cavani, who joined PSG for £55m in 2013.
Cavani turned 28 on Valentine's Day, so he doesn't have youth on his side and Van Gaal generally prefers to work with younger players.
Furthermore, Van Gaal's arrival as United manager appeared to end the club's interest in Cavani last summer.
